Alhambra and Generalife in Granada

Alhambra and Generalife

No doubts when we think in Granada the Alhambra comes to our mind immediately. Being in Granada and not visiting the Alhambra is probably the biggest sin you can ever make and something you will never forgive yourself for. The Alhambra and the Generalife form a unique monumental ensemble in the world for its beauty and originality but above all for its incredible state of conservation. During your visit you will discover a palace city founded in the 13th Century by the Nasrid dynasty that reached its peak of splendour in the 14th century with the construction of its palaces under the reign of Yusuf I and his son Muhammad V. As part of the monumental complex, don't miss the Generalife: medieval orchards, gardens and a beautiful summer palace.

How to get to Alhambra and Generalife?

You can reach the Alhambra with your own car from the centre along the Avenida de Santa Maria de la Alhambra or Cuesta Escoriaza.

You can also get there from the ring road of Granada, Ronda Sur direction to Alhambra. Once in the Alhambra you will find a paid public car park open 24 hours a day.

The public service is a good option both by taxi and by bus. In Alhambra there are two taxi stops, one next to the palaces (Los Palos taxi Stop) and the other next to the ticket offices (Mimbre Taxi Stop).

If you prefer the bus, there are two city bus lines that will also drop you off at the heart of the monastery. If you go up to Alhambra from the centre you can use the two lines: C30 and C32, but if you go to Alhambra from the Albacín your bus will be the C32.

But we certainly recommend that you go up on foot, although the distance is short from the centre of Granada, the difference in level is significant. So take your time to enjoy all the natural surroundings that Alhambra has to offer.

Do you dare to walk up?

If you have taken this last choice, you will find several paths uphill:

  • From Plaza Nueva on the Cuesta Gomerez
From El Realejo through Campo del Principe
From the lower Albaicín along the Cuesta de los Chinos

Recommendations

Alhambra has a limited capacity due to conservation reasons, so we recommend you to book your ticket in advance otherwise it is probable that you will not be able to enter.

If you can choose the season of the year to visit Alhambra the best time is spring and autumn. Our continental climate is a bit extreme, hot in summer and very cold in winter, so if you come both in summer and winter choose suitable clothing and footwear.

We also recommend that you don't go with limited time or in a hurry: there is a lot to discover and the visit will take a little over three hours.
