A town full of history and rich heritage, a must see on your holiday in Fuerteventura.
Located in the Rural Park of Betancuria Massif in the western part of Fuerteventura, Betancuria is the least densely populated town on the island with around 800 inhabitants, as well as being the oldest town of Fuerteventura. These and many other factors make Betancuria a village with a special charm and one of the most beautiful villages of the island, and for many visitors, the most beautiful there. Such is its beauty that recently, on January 1st, it was awarded the distinction of one of the most beautiful villages in Spain by FITUR 2020, belonging to the select group of 94 Spanish towns. It joins the towns of Teguise in Lanzarote and Tejeda in Gran Canaria.
It is named after the conqueror Juan de Bethencourt, who founded it in 1404 and it became its first settlement. A town with great artisan and traditional culture in which multiple handmaking products from leather, canes, palm leaves or mud, which indicates and shows this rooting by the ancestors. Master potters, weavers, and stonecutters still teach their arts to visitors to the village in the local markets and popular festivals held throughout the year.
The historical-artistic power of Betancuria is as great as the amount of visitors and canaries that visit it, falling in love with the views from the Mirador of Morro Velosa, enjoying the worship in the Church of Santa Maria de Betancuria or the Hermitage of San Diego or getting in touch with the archeological and artistic culture of the town in some of its museums.

What can you do in Betancuria?
- Morro Velosa Viewpoint: the work of César Manrique also leaves its mark on Fuerteventura, and makes this a must on your visit to the island of Fuerteventura. The place with the best views in all of Fuerteventura and that shows a different version to the one known until now of only paradisiacal beaches; showing us the historical part from its beginnings with a very outstanding patrimonial and cultural richness.
- Guise y Ayose Viewpoint: his place is one of the most representative images of Fuerteventura in all its extension and a visit more than recommended when you come to Betancuria.
- Rural Park of Betancuria: Another must if you come to Betancuria is to enjoy the rural park in all its splendour. You can go on a hiking route or enjoy it from one of the nearby places where you can appreciate the unique beauty of the place.
